Preserving feminist history for the long-term

The TIB and the Digital German Women’s Archive are cooperating on long-term archiving

Printed books, photographs, flyers, posters, films and audio recordings documenting the history of the women’s and lesbian movement(s): The Digital German Women’s Archive (DDF) makes these and other materials available online. The materials are indexed and digitised by the feminist remembrance institutions of the i.d.a. association as part of the DDF’s funding of digitisation projects. To ensure that these historically and culturally valuable materials on topics such as women’s suffrage, abortion or women in art, culture and the media are preserved for future generations, the DDF, as the aggregator of these extensive digital collections, also offers the i.d.a. institutions the option of long-term archiving. It is cooperating with the TIB on this project. “The TIB is a reliable partner for us throughout the entire long-term archiving process. TIB's continuous support and high degree of flexibility with regard to the different needs of the materials to be archived enables us to provide such a wide variety of formats for long-term archiving,” says Anke Spille, research associate in the DDF’s Digitisation and Standard Data department.

”We are delighted to be able to make an active contribution to the preservation of these extraordinary collections,” says Thomas Bähr, Head of Preservation and Long-Term Archiving at the TIB. ”We estimate that we will be archiving more than 30 terabytes of data for the DDF in the future. As part of this task, we provide advice to the DDF on the delivery and transfer of the objects to be preserved, on enrichment with metadata and on archiving and preservation measures,” explains Bähr.

TIB launches blog series: ”Preserving feminist history for the long term”

Which digital collections of the Digital German Women’s Archive are archived long-term at the TIB? Which special treasures, some of which date back to the 18th century, are included? What stories do the digitised documents tell? How does the collaboration between the DDF and TIB work and what challenges are there in the digital long-term archiving of the objects? Several articles in the TIB blog series ”Preserving feminist history for the long term” will be dedicated to these questions and the various collections of the DDF.

To begin with, we present the DDF and the Helene Lange Archive in Berlin.
